Why is the DJI RoboMaster S1 slipping and losing traction?
The omnidirectional traction system of the DJI RoboMaster S1, based on Mecanum wheels, requires perfect roller rotation and an adequate coefficient of friction. When slipping or skidding occurs, the cause is almost always attributable to a mechanical alteration. Here are the probability assessments:
-
Accumulation of debris and hair in roller pins (55%)
- Key signs: One or more of the 48 rollers (12 per wheel) are hard to turn manually, get stuck, or are completely blocked. Fibers, hair, or dust are often visible wrapped around the pins.
- Technical logic: The rotation pins of the rollers are exposed and quickly accumulate dirt, creating parasitic friction. A blocked roller does not slide sideways as it should, but drags, drastically reducing traction and causing the robot to skid, especially on smooth surfaces.
- Quick checks: Lift the robot and try to rotate each roller individually with a finger. Resistance is a direct indicator.
-
Wear or crystallization of roller rubber (25%)
- Key signs: The rollers turn freely, but the rubber surface appears shiny, hardened to the touch, or has a slippery film. The robot slips uniformly on low-friction surfaces.
- Technical logic: Exposure to floor cleaners, UV rays, or greasy road dirt can alter the thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) or silicone elastomer of the rollers, reducing their static friction coefficient. Even with free-spinning rollers, grip is insufficient.
- Typical error: Prolonged use on floors treated with waxes or unsuitable chemicals can accelerate this degradation.
-
Incorrect wheel positioning or orientation (15%)
- Key signs: Motors spin at high RPMs, slipping noises are heard, but the robot moves in incorrect directions, does not move at all, or movement is uncoordinated and unpredictable.
- Technical logic: Mecanum wheels are differentiated (right and left) and must be mounted with a specific roller inclination. Reversing the wheels causes the force vectors to oppose each other instead of cooperating, canceling out the effective thrust.
- Quick checks: Looking at the robot from above, the upper rollers of each wheel must point towards the center of the robot, forming an "X". If they form an "O", the wheels are reversed.
-
Structural damage to the hub or pin supports (5%)
- Key signs: Micro-cracks, deformations, or breaks in the roller pin housings on the wheel hub. A specific roller might be misaligned or get stuck against the adjacent wheel structure.
- Technical logic: Violent impact against obstacles or falls from uneven surfaces can deform or crack the plastic housings, compromising roller alignment and causing mechanical blockage or abnormal rolling.
- Edge case: This scenario almost exclusively occurs after a significant impact or improper use of the device.
What initial checks can I perform independently?
For a preliminary assessment and potential restoration intervention, it is recommended to follow this operational sequence:
- Wheel orientation analysis: With the robot off and the battery removed, inspect the wheel orientation. The upper rollers of each wheel must converge towards the center of the robot (forming an "X"). If the orientation is incorrect, simply swap the wheels from the right side to the left (or vice versa) to correct it.
- Manual roller rotation test: Lift the DJI RoboMaster S1 and try to rotate each roller individually with light finger pressure. All 48 rollers must spin freely, without sticking, excessive resistance, or rubbing noises.
- Thorough cleaning: If the rollers are blocked or stiff, use precision tweezers and a precision hex screwdriver set to remove the pins and clear any hair, fibers, or debris wrapped around the axle. Afterward, clean the rubber surface of all rollers with a cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol
