⚠️ SAFETY WARNING / ELECTRICAL RISK. This appliance is powered by mains electricity (230V). Before any intervention, disconnect the power cable from the wall socket. The console's internal power supply contains high-voltage capacitors capable of retaining a dangerous residual charge even after disconnection. Physical intervention on internal components carries risks of electric shock, and it is strongly recommended to entrust it to a qualified technician. ReeFix provides this diagnosis EXCLUSIVELY for educational and informational purposes.
PROBABLE CAUSE (60%): Degradation of NEC/TOKIN decoupling capacitors This is the most frequent fault for YLOD on the PS3 Fat. The OE128 or OE907 capacitors, responsible for stabilizing the power supply voltages for the CPU (CELL) and GPU (RSX), degrade over time due to heat. Their internal resistance (ESR) increases and capacitance decreases, causing instability (Vdroop phenomenon) when the chips require current peaks at startup. The control system (SYSCON) detects this anomaly and blocks the console.
Many users notice this defect when the PS3 suddenly shuts down while playing graphically demanding titles, a typical sign of capacitor failure under stress.
1001, 1002, or 1004 indicate voltage filtering problems.PROBABLE CAUSE (30%): BGA solder joint fracture or internal degradation of the RSX chip (90nm) Especially in PS3 Fat models with 90-nanometer RSX chips (COK-001 and COK-002 motherboards), excessive heat generates mechanical stress on the BGA solder joints under the chip or degrades the underfill material between the die and the substrate. This can cause a loss of contact or internal damage to the chip itself.
3034, 3003, or 4001 indicate communication problems on the RSX FlexIO bus.PROBABLE CAUSE (7%): General power supply problems (Internal APS/EADP power supply) A fault in the console's internal power supply can prevent it from turning on or cause an immediate shutdown.
MINOR CAUSE (3%): Other causes (Firmware corruption, CPU CELL failures, secondary short circuits) These causes are less common but possible and require even more in-depth diagnostic analysis.
If the console shows YLOD with 3 beeps and a flashing red light, contact a specialized technician for SYSCON log reading. If the codes indicate power supply problems (e.g., 1001/1002), repair is possible by replacing the NEC/TOKIN capacitors (medium-high cost). If the codes point to the RSX chip (e.g., 3034/4001), replacing the console is often more cost-effective due to the high costs and low durability of complex repairs. If the console shows no signs of life or shuts down without YLOD, you might consider replacing the power supply (simpler, but always with caution) or replacing the entire console.
